The average career of a professional athlete is between 3 and 5 years.

Unfortunately, there are too many examples of athletes that earned millions of dollars during their careers and went broke after retiring. The reasons are similar in many cases: bad investment decisions, poor advice, pressure from family and friends, agents' conflicts of interest, etc...
